Matthew 19:29-30 Everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.
There is a cost to being a follower (disciple) of Jesus. Disciple comes from the same word for discipline. It takes the discipline of a disciple to say no to some things and yes to others. If we want to follow Jesus we got to be prepared to leave certain things behind. Sometimes even family, friends or careers.
There is also a reward of being a follower. Good things from Jesus will come our way. He even promises us a hundred times as much than we have left to follow him!
However we should keep in mind that many who are first will be last. This means that many people who have left everything to follow Jesus, and have even received a hundredfold reward in this life, can be trapped by those things in the end, and end up being last in the Kingdom.
So we should be wise to keep the first thing the first thing. Let us not lose our first love, that brought us home in the first place: Jesus himself.
