Focus on yourself

It is great to have a heart to serve others. Once you discover your “mission” in life, it can feel like a great relief. Maybe you have now finally discovered that you love teaching, and you do it with a passion. Or your wish to make a lot of money came true, so that you can now build that much-desired hospital in Africa. Whatever it is, make sure you do not lose the focus on yourself.

Acts 20:28 Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers.

Before we can keep watch over others we must keep watch over ourselves. When you are in an airplane and there is an emergency, the oxygen masks will come down. What do the instructions say? “First put the mask on the child next to you, and then on yourself”? … No! They actually say, “First put the mask on yourself, and then you can help the person next to you”. The reason is simple: if we do not learn to take care of ourselves first, it will be too late to take care of the next person.

“Love your neighbor as you love yourself” is in the Bible for two reasons: of course we should love  our neigbor. But we should love ourselves first. Never lose the focus on taking care of… YOU.
