What most naturally comes to us when we face a challenge, is to fight. We (especially men) like to be in control, like to see over the situation and then make decisions and move forward in strength.
Sometimes it does not take a fight to win, it takes surrender. All we can then do is watch the Lord bring about a victory for us, while we sit still. Moses and three million Jews were hemmed in at the Red Sea, with water and desert on one side, and the Egyptians on the other. They were told:
Exodus 14:14 The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.
This is difficult. We much rather muster up some strength and do at least something. But more strength is found in surrender. It takes all your strength to let go and let God. Once you have given in though, he will fight for you.
Don’t make it more difficult for yourself. Don’t try to be a hero. Don’t prolong the suffering of dying to self. Give it up. Let God be God. You just be still.
Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God”
