Meditation on peace

In today’s world there are many reasons to get disquiet. What about my financial security, my bank, my job? What about the ageing of our population, my children’s future? What about new viruses attacking our health? The worrier can add a lot of things to his list of “things to worry about” these days. There is a need for peace. Not the “world peace” on Miss America’s wishlist, but a peace that works its way deep inside:

2 Thessalonians 3:16 Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.

This is one of the most amazing promises of Scripture. A meditation:

Now – not tomorrow, not yesterday, but right now God wants to give you peace
may the Lord – he is Lord of all, so he reigns over any and every situation
of peace himself – to get peace you got to go to the source: “the Lord of peace himself” – there is no other one
give – he has it, and wants to give it to you
you – not your husband, your wife, your mother, the pastor or your neighbor. You!
peace – a “condition of freedom from disturbance, ‘shalom’, i.e. soundness, health, prosperity, well-being” (International Standard Bible Encyclopedia)
at all times – not just when things are going well, not just at night or in the morning… at all times
and in every way – whichever way you have walked, whichever direction you are going, wherever you are on the road
The Lord be with all of you – It is God we need. It is God’s peace that can be with us

This Christmas season it is my prayer that… now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.
