When you ask people what they think of God, the church or Christians, many will answer something like this “there’s so many rules, I don’t like it”. Do’s and don’ts, regulations, laws, strictness. Those are the things that define Christianity for many. How sad. But how human also. Somehow people, including the church, find safety in rules and regulations. As long as we know the rules, we feel we have something to live up to. And so having been set free from the law by Christ, we run back to it like a dog to its vomit.
Colossians 2:16-17 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.
The reality of New Testament living does not consist in rules, special days, whether or not to keep the Sabbath, or whether or not to eat a hamburger. The only safety we can find is found in Christ. Not in rules. Only in loving relationship with Christ, can we start living the life we were always meant to live. When we find the Light, the shadows fade away.
