There is no success for lone rangers in the Kingdom of God. People who have received a “revelation” and are exercising authority over others, without submitting to any authority themselves, are on their own, and really have no authority that is reliable. Jesus commended a centurion (a Roman officer in charge over about eighty soldiers) for having more faith than anyone in Israel, because of his revelation on authority. The centurion needed Jesus to heal his servant, and said to Jesus:
Luke 7:8 “Say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him.
Why was Jesus amazed? In the same way as the centurion submitted himself to authority, his statement showed that he knew Jesus had submitted himself to God’s authority. Therefore he believed that Jesus had authority over other things, such as sickness, just like the centurion had authority over others.
This showed his faith that there really is no authority without being under authority.
